Perseverance is a requisite quality for success – This funda has been advocated by gurus and pundits all over. It seems to make sense when you look at all the stories of people and see what sets them apart from the less remarkable ones. But what is happening there? When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

I find it hard to believe that some people are more motivated than others. I am confident that no one will say they lack motivation if you ask anyone. They may say they can’t stick to a daily routine, and you might take it for lack of motivation. It could just as quickly be boredom, the disappointment of feeling stuck, or any other form of adversity.

It makes sense to wonder what is required to deal with the inevitable adversity in any struggle. In other words, what is the thing that empowers people to persevere and keep going?

I have found that the answer lies in a solid belief in one’s purpose and a clear vision for the future. Only when a person is convinced of their purpose and justified in their reasons for a pursuit can they be successful in it. Otherwise, you leave yourself open to doubt and fear when you see that some things aren’t going as expected.

When we know why you are doing something in the first place and believe in our plan of action, we can remain patient and stay the course when things seem to be at a standstill. When we accept that the long road to success in any pursuit in life will have a few bumps, we can manage everything under our control.

I am in the middle of an umpteenth attempt to lose weight. After every few days, I seem to make some errors. It looks more like a blunder, and I feel like giving up, but I know why I started in the first place. I know the bigger picture, so I can shrug my shoulders at these goof-ups and learn something valuable.

We get results initially when we start something new with a lot of gusto, passion and enthusiasm. Soon, the honeymoon period ends, and challenges appear one after another. Boredom sets in, our growth plateaus and other things need our attention. We can persevere through all of these things if we know why we started in the first place and where we want to go.

Perseverance is not the answer to anything. It’s a long, smart-sounding but overused word with no meaning. There are underlying causes and factors that we need to be aware of if we are to stay the course we set for ourselves. It bodes well to understand your mindset and tendencies.

We need to remind ourselves about the purpose of our pursuits and know what excuses we give when we feel like stopping. These minor setbacks are not your failures; they don’t make you a failure. If you make a mistake and fall off the wagon, you must get back on and start again.
