I have been practicing public speaking for over ten years as a member of Toastmasters International. I have learned a lot and grown in confidence. I have mentored many people and can indeed train people. I noticed that over time, I stopped paying attention to the feedback I received on my performance. I stopped interacting with people more experienced than I. I had reached a plateau.

Something similar can happen to anyone in any walk of life. As you grow in confidence and stature, you stop devoting time to learning as much as you did when you were a beginner. You become busier and more confident, resulting in you thinking that you know everything. There is only one exception: people who consciously devote time to learning something new.

It took me a while to realize that being a part of Toastmasters wasn’t enough because I had started taking it for granted. I needed to challenge myself and start something new. I took the opportunity to pursue Toastmasters in France. Since the audience was very different from that in India, it was the perfect opportunity to challenge myself as a leader and communicator.

I found new mentors who could help me. I spent time learning from these people about public speaking and the French language. I realized that the more you grow and the higher you go, the more you need mentors to help you navigate the way ahead.

Things only get tougher because the gaps become less apparent as your skills refine, but they still exist. You need mentors with the eye for detail and the knowledge to identify your flaws. You need people who understand the possibilities more deeply than you do.
