I once attended the Landmark Forum. One of the more powerful but initially confusing ideas shared was that you always have a choice. Even if there is only one option, you still have a choice. First, they ask you to choose between vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Once you choose chocolate (duh!), then in the second round, they say, “Vanilla, choose!” You get confused because there aren’t two options, so if you only have one option, isn’t the decision already made?

That’s the point! You still get to make a decision, and you still have a choice. What would you do if you felt like you had no choice? You would realize that you have no control over the situation and accept it. You can accept the situation instead of living in “denial” and crying about it.

What I understand from the invincible power of choice is that even if the only option is to suffer, you will suffer a lot less or none at all if you choose to suffer. At the very least, acceptance ensures you don’t waste time cribbing about why something this bad happened to you. Instead, you can focus on what you can do about the situation and determine how to improve it.

When you remain calm instead of getting emotional, you retain your sense of judgment and clarity while keeping your eyes on your goal.
