Daily Stoic Meditation: What is My Mantra Today?

One of my mentors shared a practice with me. His phone wallpaper consists of a single word that is his theme for the year. I adopted that practice, using Hustle in 2020, Independence in 2021, and Discipline in 2022. I didn’t choose new words for 2023 and 2024 because I realized that everything I was trying to accomplish required consistency, for which you need discipline. That’s all there is to it.

The same mentor in his seminars repeats the phrase, “The Best is Yet to Come.” This is something that I believe in because it gives me hope that better days lie ahead. One of my favorite quotes is by Steve Martin: “Be So Good, They Can’t Ignore You.” This quote is also Cal Newport’s book’s central tenet and namesake, one of my favorites.

Another one that resonates with me is “Do the Thing and You Shall Have the Power.” by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It reminds me that you learn by doing. To know how to swim, you must first enter the water. Most people believe that first, they will learn how to swim; only then can they go in the water. They wait for circumstances to be right before they can act, but that’s not how things work.
